Hi, since you are reading this I assume you would like to know a bit about me. I have no idea why you do, but ok, here it is.
First and foremost I am a penciler. I love to draw. I always have. Though I have been dabbling in writing, coloring, and lettering. When I was younger I had dreams of being a cartoonist. I wanted to do animation of a comic strip. In high school a friend of mine reconnected me to comics. After reading 'WHAT IF? SPIDER-MAN WAS DEAD?', I knew I wanted to do comics and I have been working on breaking in since. My training is pretty much self-taught. Sure I did the usual high school art stuff but for the most part it was useless in helping me to learn to do comics. I learned for seeing. I would study all my favorite artists and try to see what I could learn from them. The I became fascinated with some of the 'old school' artists like John Byrne, George Perez, and John Romita Sr. Soon I developed a style that has an old school/cartoon style.
When I thought I was ready I did the usual stuff. Submissions, did a few conventions, but nothing was hitting. My cousin and studio co-founder Chris Carpenter began to submit to some very small companies to try to just get into the door. The first few places we were left us very unhappy. There were SO many stops and starts that nothing we did ever saw print. We knew we needed to have something in print to show off what we could do so we decided to start a studio and self-publish our own comic.
When we started the studio we had no idea what we should name it. A relative suggested that because everything we have done in our lives have been the hard way, maybe that is what we should call the studio. Thus Hard Way Studios was born. Sort of. The first comic we did was a zombie story called The Shelter. We came up with the story idea and I wrote, drew, and lettered the issue as well as coloring the cover and Chris inked and edited to book. It was bad. We quickly found that if we were going to do anything of significance with the studio we were going to have to bring in new members. So we began to take submissions and the blessings began to build up.
The studio was fortunate enough to meet, work with, and learn from some truly talented and driven people. I can honestly say that the studio would not be where we are with out everyone who is a part of the studio. I would like to say thanks to everyone. |
